Dietary Restrictions Explained
Ma! What’s for dinner?!
There are so many variants of dietary restrictions and while it is not expected that you accommodate every single person’s needs, here are some overall general ideas to consider.
Here is a list of common questions around dietary restrictions and pertaining to your wedding day:
Gluten and Wheat Free (GF)
- People avoid foods that contain gluten (breads, fried food, anything made with flour), but it is often also in dressings, seasonings, cereals.
Dairy Free (DF)
- People avoid foods like yogurts, icing, creamy dressings, creamy sauces, ice cream.
Vegetarian (Veg or V depending on the venue)
- People who avoid meat, poultry, or seafood.
Vegan (V)
- People will avoid all animal products and by products of animals: meat, eggs, milk, butter, cheese, etc.
Nut free
- Nut allergies can be very serious, and people can have serious reactions to food that has or has been cross contaminated with nuts.
How would I know if someone has a dietary restriction?
On your RSVP card or wedding website, you can provide an option for people to provide their dietary restriction(s).
What if someone does have a dietary restriction and I want to accommodate?
Inform your planner, venue contact and catering contact. They will be able to make adjustments. It is important for the planner and venue contact to know as well to ensure that person receives their correct meal.
What if I am having a plated meal?
Typically, chefs can put together a plate for someone who is vegan if the plated dinner is a meat dish. However, it’s helpful to ask in advance so the chef can be prepared. If you are at an offsite venue and catering is bringing food in, the options become even more limited than at a venue with a full kitchen.
What if I am having stations?
When selecting your food stations, consider offering an option that doesn’t contain meat or dairy. Use place cards that say the food item and if it is appropriate for various dietary restrictions: GF, DF, VEG, V etc. Most caterers should be able to help you with this!
What if I am having a buffet?
When selecting your food options, consider offering an option (or heavy sides) that doesn’t contain meat or dairy. Use place cards that say the food item and if it is appropriate for various dietary restrictions: GF, DF, VEG, V etc. Most caterers should be able to help you with this!
PRO TIP: If you have no intention of accommodating dietary restrictions, don’t ask. If you ask, then the guest will assume their dietary restriction will be taken care of.
